NEXUS-NY Program Coordinator

HTR is hiring a Program Coordinator for the NEXUS-NY Clean Energy Proof-of-Concept Center

The NEXUS-NY Clean Energy Seed Accelerator has an open position for a Program Coordinator responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Proof-of-Concept Center (POCC). The Program Coordinator will collaborate with multiple internal and external resources in order to carry out the mission of the NEXUS-NY program.

NEXUS-NY Program Coordinator Description

The High Tech Rochester (HTR) Clean Energy Proof-of-Concept Center (NEXUS-NY) is an initiative aimed at identifying and accelerating the commercialization of clean energy innovations in the Upstate New York region. This initiative was developed and funded by the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), and is built on the understanding that:

  • Scalable startup companies are engines of of technology commercialization and economic growth;
  • Universities in New York are conducting a significant amount of energy-related R&D;
  • The transition of the R&D to scalable business startups happens infrequently;
  • Changes in university-ecosystem engagement can increase the rate of startup formation and the likelihood of startup success; and
  • There is a key gap at the “Proof-of-Concept” stage of product development.

The goal of the NEXUS-NY program is to provide early-stage support to enable the development and validation of promising clean energy technologies that are, or will become, the platform for startup companies located in New York state.

High Tech Rochester has partnered with a number of Upstate New York universities and other industry partners to create NEXUS-NY. These universities include: SUNY Alfred State, Clarkson University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University at Buffalo, University of Rochester and the SUNY Research Foundation. While technologies and startups selected for inclusion in the program do not have to come from these universities, there combined $3B annually of research and development provide significant deal flow for the NEXUS-NY Initiative. Additional partners include early-stage venture funds and angel investment groups, and industry partners with expertise in prototyping, product development and intellectual property.

NEXUS-NY operates using a seed accelerator business model. It provides financial, business and educational support to researchers so that they can answer three fundamental questions:

  1. Is there a special customer problem that is well aligned with the innovation, and is there innovation substantively differentiated (i.e. can they find a problem-solution fit)?
  2. Can the technology be shown to work, even if only at small scale?
  3. Will a customer or partner validate the technology works in a relevant environment?

The  NEXUS-NY program is run in 12-month cycles with each cohort of idea teams. The program culminates in “Demo Day” presentations to potential investors and/or partners.

NEXUS-NY Program Coordinator Position Description

Essential Functions
The NEXUS-NY Proof-of-Concept Center (POCC) Program Coordinator is responsible for day-today administration of the POCC, and will:

  • Assist in recruitment of potential POCC participants
  • Assist with identification and management of external collaborators/strategic partners
  • Manage marketing and awareness building function with specific focus on digital marketing
  • Manage, support and help expand the mentor network
  • Coordinate and support POCC events
  • Complete all programmatic reporting as required by NYSERDA and other funding sources
  • Collect and track measures of success
  • track volunteer and other in-kind activities
  • Assist with program review, design and implementation
  • Identify possible funding sources and participate in grant writing
  • Maintain a high degree of compliance with the contract through proactive review of programmatic and financial metrics
  • Manage disbursement of funds to POCC teams
  • Perform similar duties for other HTR programs, including Launchpad and Pre-Seed Workshop
  • Other duties as required

The NEXUS-NY Program Coordinator will collaborate with multiple internal and external resources in order to carry out the mission of the POCC.

Requirements

Preferences

  • Familiarity with startups, the Upstate startup ecosystem and/or commercialization of university, research-derived innovations
  • Prior experience managing grant programs
  • Clean energy familiarity
  • Marketing communication experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Access to an automobile and able to drive

Compensation: Salary
Work Schedule: Full time (40 hours / wk)
